Murano glass is a renowned product of the island of Murano, located off the coast of Venice, Italy. The craft of manufacturing Murano glass originated in early 8^th century Venice, where there was considerable Asian and Muslim influence. In 1291 the Venetian Republic ordered the glassmakers to move their workshops to Murano, fearing that fire caused by production might put the city’s mostly wooden buildings at risk. By the end of the 16^th century, the island had achieved worldwide acclaim for its glassmaking – a reputation that continues to this day.
