The design of this real pearl necklace has been inspired by a painting owned by the Marquess of Tavistock and Trustees of the Bedford Estate.

The necklace forms part of a collection has been designed exclusively for the British Museum by Caroline Haelterman of the Real Pearl Company. Using Elizabethan paintings, inspired film and extensive research, the collection has been designed to recreate the opulence of Elizabethan fashion jewellery.

Having invested heavily in their own pearl farm in China, The Real Pearl Company creates real pearl jewellery, such as this necklace. The pearls used here are of the freshwater cultured variety.

Ideal as a gift, the necklace is supplied in a presentation box.

Care

Pearls are soft and delicate because they are organic and produced by a living thing. However when well cared for, they will maintain their lustre for centuries. The best way to maintain their lustre is to wear the pearls often, and wipe them down with a soft cloth afterward- pearls absorb the oils from skin, which helps keep them moist. Pearls should be stored in a cloth pouch or jewellery bag, separated from other jewellery to prevent nicks or chipping. The pearls should not come in contact with cosmetics, hairspray, perfume, chlorinated water, or other harsh chemicals. To keep them clean, let them be the last item put on when dressing, and the first item taken off at the end of an evening.
