Golden Kamuy was created in 2015 by Noda Satoru, who hails from Hokkaido where the narrative is set. It is a dramatic action tale that takes places in the early 1900s on the northern Japanese island of Hokkaido.

The main character, Sugimoto Sa'ichi teams up with a local Ainu girl named Aspirpa in search for a hidden trove of Ainu gold. The location of it is hidden in the tattoos of a group of convicts who escape from Abashiri prision.

The storyline allows readers to learn about Hokkaido, Ainu customs and wilderness survival techniques, such as foraging for wild foods.
