This luxury cushion features one of the panels of a sliding- door painting attributed to the Kanō School. The Kanō school is one of the most famous schools of Japanese painting.
Fashioned from luxury polyester velvet on both the face and back, this pillow is filled with natural feathers with piping that frames the illustration.

Currently located in the department of Asia within the British Museum, this set of sliding door paintings depicts a brilliant scene of birds, flowers, trees and rocks beside an expanse of water, vibrant with life-force.

The season changes within the painting from red maples of autumn to winter snow on the cypress trees. It is likely that this is just a part of a much larger composition that originally continued on doors all around the room and included natural scenes from all the seasons. The rather shallow depth of the composition, with much space filled by sprinkled gold and (now tarnished) silver sand, is typical of Kano school painting of the Momoyama (1568-1600) and early Edo (1600-1868) period.
