Griffin Rhyton Metal Bookmark

Exclusive to the British Museum, a metal bookmark with a design based on a griffin-shaped rhyton.

This bookmark forms part of a range accompanying the British Museum exhibition Luxury and power: Persia to Greece.

The bookmark is made from metal and enamel, and is finished with a gold silk tassel.

The design of the bookmark shows an ornate Persian silver and gold rhyton which was crafted in around 500-400 BC. The griffin-shaped drinking vessel forms part of the Oxus Treasure – a hoard of beautifully worked pieces of Achaemenid gold, silver and metal found on the Oxus River which date to around the 5th to 4th centuries BC.

The Persian court of the Achaemenid Empire was characterised by lavish displays of wealth and luxury, often through ornamental metal objects.
