The tartan pattern has an ancient history. Its earliest known origins in Scotland can be dated to the 3rd or 4th century when specific tartan colours and patterns would be associated with individual clans, and by the 18th century it had become characteristic of highland dress.
Johnstons of Elgin have been producing fine knitwear since 1797 at the mill banks of the River Lossie in Elgin, Scotland. Their Scottish wool and cashmere products have been granted the prestigious Royal Warrant of Appointment to the Prince of Wales.
