A handmade hanging decoration in the shape of a hippo figurine from ancient Egypt.

The design is based on an object in the British Museum collection - a blue earthenware figurine in the shape of a hippo from ancient Egypt. It is thought to originate from a tomb, where it may have been placed to create a suitable environment for the gods of the afterlife.

Hippos were identified with the Goddess Thoeris, who was thought to bring luck and protection, and with Seth, the god of storms. The hippo is decorated with marsh plants and flowers symbolic of their habitat.

This decoration, featuring beadwork and metallic thread, is hand- embroidered in India by skilled local artisans. It is a collaboration piece between the British Museum and the design studio Poonam's House.
