Hiroshige's Cats Greetings Card
A greetings card inspired by a sketch of several cats from c.1830 by Japanese artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858).
The delightful image on the front of the card shows sketches of cats in various positions, stretching, playing, scratching, licking and sleeping, all the favourite things that our furry friends like to spend their days doing.
In Japanese folklore, cats have protective powers and symbolise good luck and fortune. They often take the centre stage as characters in art and literature. It is believed that they were brought to Japan during sixth century by Buddhist monks visiting from China. They were accompanied during their travels by domesticated cats to guard over their possessions and protect the sacred texts from mice.
The sketch is by Utagawa Hiroshige who is best known for his woodblock prints during Edo period Japan.
