These drop earrings feature Lapis Lazuli gemstones and gold pearls, with a Sterling silver fish hook closure.

They form part of a special collection designed exclusively for the British Museum by Caroline Haelterman from the Real Pearl Company. Extensively researching Ancient Roman gemstone jewellery, the range has been inspired by the intricate and beautiful jewellery discovered by archaeologists. Lapis Lazuli gemstones, as featured here, were popular in ancient Roman jewellery; they believed that the gemstone was a powerful aphrodisiac.

The matching necklace is also available to purchase online.

Care

Pearls are soft and delicate because they are organic and produced by a living thing. However when well cared for, they will maintain their lustre for centuries. The best way to maintain their lustre is to wear the pearls often, and wipe them down with a soft cloth afterward- pearls absorb the oils from skin, which helps keep them moist. Pearls should be stored in a cloth pouch or jewellery bag, separated from other jewellery to prevent nicks or chipping. The pearls should not come in contact with cosmetics, hairspray, perfume, chlorinated water, or other harsh chemicals. To keep them clean, let them be the last item put on when dressing, and the first item taken off at the end of an evening.
