Exclusive

Exclusive to the British Museum, a pack of ten postcards featuring images of the characterful Lewis Chessmen.

The Lewis Chessmen were found on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland in 1831. The pieces consist of elaborately worked walrus ivory and whales’ teeth in the forms of seated kings and queens, mitred bishops, knights on their mounts, standing warders, and pawns in the shapes of obelisks.

It is believed that they belonged to a merchant travelling from Norway to Ireland, and may have been lost in a shipwreck. The decoration on the pieces has led to them being dated from the middle to the late 12th century and made in either Scandinavia or possibly East Anglia in Britain.

An ideal gift for a history lover.
