Lyte Jewel Necklace

This necklace is based on a four-hundred-year-old trinket in the British Museum's collection called 'The Lyte Jewel'. <br> <br> The Lyte Jewel is a gold pendant jewel containing a portrait miniature of James I. In 1610 it was presented by King James I of England to Thomas Lyte, of Lytescary in Somerset (date 1638). His will (1747) specified that the Jewel should pass to his daughter, Silvestra (Blackwell), and to her daughters. The British Museum acquired the jewel in 1898 when it was bequeathed (given in a will) by Baron Ferdinand Anselm de Rothschild. <br> <br> Made in pewter, plated in 18ct gold and decorated with enamel and Swarovski crystals, these "Inspired by" pieces from Ancestors of Dover replicate the intricate and opulent design of the original piece in the Museum's collection. Exclusive to the British Museum, a pendant necklace inspired by the 17^th century Lyte Jewel.

Made from 18 carat gold-plated pewter, and set with enamel and Swarovski crystals, this necklace is based on the original artefact which can be seen on display in the British Museum’s collection.

The Lyte Jewel is an impressive gold pendant that originally contained a masterful portrait miniature of James I as a young man. The original gold ornament, set with diamonds and featuring enamel detailing, was attributed to Nicholas Hilliard, painter, limner and engraver to Queen Elizabeth I and later James I of England, although there is suggestion that it may have been the work of his pupil, Isaac Oliver. In 1610 it was presented to Thomas Lyte of Lytescary in Somerset, and was bequeathed to the British Museum in 1898 by Baron Ferdinand Anselm de Rothschild.
