Maat or Mayet, thought to have been pronounced as (Muh-aht) was the Ancient Egyptian concept of truth, balance, order, law, morality, and justice. Maat was also personified as a goddess regulating the stars, seasons, and the actions of both mortals and the deities, who set the order of the universe from chaos at the moment of creation.

The goddess Maat was viewed as the personification of the ancient Egyptian principles of truth, balance and justice. She was sometimes depicted, as here, with an ostrich feather head decoration, which was also found represented in the Weighing of the Heart ceremony during mummification, in which the heart of the deceased was weighed by the jackal-headed god Anubis against the Feather of Maat.
