A mounted print inspired by the painting Madonna (1895/1902) by Edvard Munch.

Munch felt this painting showed ‘Woman in a state of surrender – where she acquires the afflicted beauty of a Madonna’. Munch became disillusioned with the merits of free love, but remained convinced of the ‘sanctity’ of the creative act, suggested here by the red halo over the woman’s head

As many of Munch’s paintings, he had around five versions of Madonna – one of which he painted an erotic version for his friend and Norwegian writer Hans Jaeger. He hung this up in his prison cell.

This print is part of an exclusive range to accompany the new British Museum exhibition Edvard Munch: love and angst.
