Medusa Pendant Necklace
A gold-plated necklace with a pendant inspired by the mythical gorgon Medusa.
This necklace forms part of a range accompanying the British Museum exhibition Feminine power: the divine to the demonic.
The necklace is crafted from gold-plated silver, and is supplied with an information card. The pendant shows Medusa’s face surrounded by the writhing snakes of her hair.
In ancient Greek mythology, Medusa was a gorgon with snakes for hair who could turn men to stone with a single look, and featured most notably in the story of Perseus, who was ordered to kill Medusa by king Polydectes. Although Medusa has generally been recognised as a monster, and therefore a villain, modern interpretations, especially drawing on Ovid’s Metamorphoses, have recast her as a victim.
A fun history-inspired gift.
