Osiris Standing Ornament

A handsome ornament of the ancient Egyptian god Osiris.

The ornament is part of a range accompanying the British Museum exhibition Hieroglyphs: unlocking ancient Egypt.

This classic depiction of Osiris shows him wearing his Atef feathered headdress and carrying his crook and flail – symbols that pharaohs adopted to represent kingship and the fertility of their land. As here, Osiris was traditionally depicted with the lower part of his body bound as a mummy.

The husband of Isis and father of Horus, Osiris was the god of the underworld, death and rebirth. He became the most prominent god in the Middle and New Kingdoms among the common people of Egypt. In Osiris, the people saw the possibility that all Egyptians had a chance of an afterlife.
