This is a replica of the original sculpture which was a corner of one of the slabs of the north frieze of the Parthenon at Athens.

This temple, dedicated to the goddess Athena, was built on a terraced site at the highest point of the Acropolis between 447 and 438 BC. It was richly decorated with sculpture, including 92 square panels (metopes) in high relief around the outside and two groups of free- standing figures in the gables (pediments) at either end. The frieze, which was carved in low relief, was a little over a meter long, and ran all around the building below the ceiling of the colonnade. The subject of the frieze is the procession that escorted a new robe brought to the statue of Athena every fourth year at Panathenaic festival, the celebration of the birthday of the goddess. About half of the frieze was taken up by the cavalry that bought up the rear of the procession.

Exclusive to the British Museum, a marble replica of a fragment from the Parthenon friezes.

This extraordinary home ornament has been crafted from hand-finished marble with stone resin, and features brackets for wall hanging.

The replica is based faithfully on the original sculpture from the north frieze of the Parthenon in Athens, and shows a man behind a rearing horse. The imagery featured on the original 92 decorative metopes (panels) surrounding the Parthenon appears to be mostly relating to war and great battles. Gods, men and horses were typical motifs for the astonishing stone images.

The Parthenon was built in the city of Athens in Greece in the 5th century BC. Designed by Pheidas, and carved by a team of anonymous masons, the Parthenon presents a vision of Athens at the centre of the cosmos, and was intended as a temple dedicated to the city’s patron and namesake, the goddess Athena.

This astonishing replica will be a worthy addition to the home of any history lover.
