A one strand pearl necklace featuring oval white pearls and a central coral gemstone.

This collection has been designed exclusively for the British Museum by Caroline Haelterman from the Real Pearl Company. Extensively researching ancient Roman gemstone jewellery, the range has been inspired by the intricate jewellery discovered by archaeologists.

In ancient Rome, coral pendants (as featured here) were given to children to protect them from danger and sickness. When worn on the neck of a woman, they believed coral could protect against infertility. Other credits given to the gemstone were described by the Roman author Pliny the Elder and involved protection against being struck by lightning as well as to still temptresses.

The pearls used here are of the freshwater cultured variety. The beads are hand knotted on silk thread with a steel magnetic ball clasp for closure.

Exclusive to the British Museum, a strand of oval pearl beads surrounding a central coral gemstone.

The freshwater-cultured pearls of this striking necklace are suspended on a silk thread and finished with a magnetic steel ball clasp. Designed by Caroline Haelterman for the Real Pearl Company, this piece has been inspired by intricate jewels discovered by archaeologists at historical Roman dig sites.

In ancient Rome, coral pendants were given to children to protect them against danger and sickness. Coral was believed to prevent infertility in women, and Roman naturalist Pliny the Elder credited it as giving protection against being struck by lightning.
