Canopic Jars Pencil

Exclusive to the British Museum, a children’s pencil inspired by ancient Egyptian canopic jars.

The pencil is part of a range accompanying the British Museum exhibition Hieroglyphs: unlocking ancient Egypt.

Canopic jars were used by the Ancient Egyptians during the mummification process to store and preserve the internal organs of the deceased for the afterlife. Originally plain in design, by the Nineteenth Dynasty, the lids would commonly feature depictions of the four sons of Horus, each associated with a single organ; baboon-headed Hapi with the lungs, jackal-headed Duamutef with the stomach, falcon-headed Qebehsenuef with the intestines, and the human-headed Imsety with the liver.
