Exhibition book

The accompanying title to the British Museum exhibition of the same name, Playing With Money  – written by the exhibition's curator Robert Bracey.

Board games are thousands of years old and apparently a universal in human society. It is the idea of a game as a simulation or reflection of reality which is explored in this book, and focuses on the pervasive human experience of economics, in particular on money.

It was only in the early twentieth century that games about economics first became popular, and Robert Bracey’s aim, is to explore the development of those modern board games which represent money, from the late nineteenth century to the modern day.

Playing With Money offers an opportunity to explore ideas about how we think about money, and to display parts of the Museum’s collection devoted to money-related toys and games.
