Princess Takiyasha; Utagawa Kuniyoshi Print
Exclusive to the British Museum, a triptych print of Utagawa Kuniyoshi’s Takiyasha the Witch and the Skeleton Spectre (1845-6).
This print forms part of a range accompanying the British Museum exhibition Feminine power: the divine to the demonic.
This print is based on a 19th century woodblock print which shows the sorceress Princess Takiyasha-hime summoning a gashadokuro (giant skeleton) to defeat the samurai Oya no Taro Mitsukuni. Kuniyoshi’s characters are linked to historical charaters and oral tradition; the daughter of the rebel Samurai Taira no Masakado was believed to have learned sorcery after her father was killed for leading an unsuccessful uprising against the emperor in 939.
A fabulous piece of home art for lovers of Japanese prints.
