Queen Elizabeth II Great Court Postcard Pack
Exclusive to the British Museum, a postcard pack featuring photographic images of features of the Museum’s Great Court.
In Robert Smirke’s original design, the Great Court area was to have been a garden with an open courtyard but in 1852 it became home to the Museum’s library department, and the Reading Room and the iron bookstacks surrounding it opened in 1857.
When the library was relocated to the British Library in 1997, the area was redeveloped into a public space. Designed by Foster and Partners, the Great Court was transformed into a two-acre indoor courtyard enclosed by a spectacular glass roof, made up of 3,212 unique panes of glass with the Reading Room in the centre.
The Queen Elizabeth II Great Court was opened by Her Majesty the Queen on 6 December 2000.
