A set of four figurines representing ancient Roman gladiators.

These impressively detailed figures represent the variety of weapons with which the Roman gladiators fought. Represented here are the Secutor, Retarius, Thracian and Samnite fighters. The set includes information about the history of gladiatorial combat.  

In ancient Rome, gladiators engaged in brutal combat in public arenas as a popular but gory form of entertainment. Gladiators would fight other gladiators or animals, and usually spectators would place bets on who would emerge the victor, making it a lucrative business. Gladiators were often slaves or criminals hoping to win their freedom, although some professional fighters were esteemed as celebrities, and several rounds of fights would take place during one day’s events.
