A resin ornament of the seated Buddhist figure, the White Tara.

This ornament forms part of a range accompanying the British Museum exhibition Feminine power: the divine to the demonic.

This ornament is cast from resin in Nepal and recreates the Tara in extraordinary detail.

In different branches of Buddhism, Tara is worshipped varyingly as a Buddha, a Bodhisattva or a goddess, and is the embodiment of compassionate wisdom. Her name means ‘She who Carries Across’, and she is known for being astonishingly beautiful and serene. Tara often manifests in 21 forms, representing the range of her powers; each Tara manifestation is associated with protection from a different fear or ailment. The White Tara is associated with wisdom, compassion and long life, and is recognisable by the seven eyes that adorn her body. She is usually depicted seated with both legs fully crossed, one hand over the heart and the other reaching outwards in a gesture of divine generosity.

A wonderful souvenir of the exhibition.
