Sekhmet Bust Ornament

A sturdy bust ornament of the ancient Egyptian goddess Sekhmet.

This ornament is part of a range accompanying the British Museum exhibition Hieroglyphs: unlocking ancient Egypt.

In ancient Egypt, Sekhmet was worshipped as the goddess of war and disease and was typically portrayed with the head of a lioness and wearing a sun disc headdress, symbolic of her power and status as daughter of the sun god Ra. Alongside the association with her destructive powers, Sekhmet was also seen as a protective goddess, and was often prayed to for healing and cure from disease.
