Sekhmet Standing Ornament

A resin ornament inspired by the ancient Egyptian goddess Sekhmet.

This ornament forms part of a range accompanying the British Museum exhibition Feminine power: the divine to the demonic.

In ancient Egypt, Sekhmet was worshipped as the goddess of war and disease, and was typically portrayed with the head of a lioness and wearing a sun disc headdress, symbolic of her power and status as daughter of the sun god Ra. Alongside the association with her destructive powers, Sekhmet was also seen as a protective goddess, and was often prayed to for healing and cure from disease.
