The replica is exactly the same size as the original: 23cm (length) x 19cm (width) x 13cm (height). <br /> <br /> The original box was richly carved on the sides and lid in high relief with a range of scenes and accompanying texts in both the runic and Roman alphabets, and in both Old English and Latin. The box shows scenes from Roman, Jewish, Christian and Germanic tradition. <br /> <br /> The replica is handmade and painted in the UK by the British sculptor Andrew Lilley exclusively for the Museum. <br /> </p>

The piece is finished with a marble base, and has been produced to the scale of the original.

The Franks Casket, also known as the Auzon Casket, is an 8th century rectangular Anglo-Saxon box which is crafted from intricately carved whale bone. Although many of the original faces of the box have been removed and replaced, the replicated carvings show scenes from Roman, Jewish, Christian and Germanic tradition, including the Adoration of the Magi and the story of Romulus and Remus, alongside texts in Latin and Old English.
