Exclusive to the British Museum, a mounted postcard showing the interior of the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court, 2010.

At the centre of the British Museum sits the largest covered public square in Europe, the Queen Elizabeth II Great Court. In Robert Smirke’s original design, the central space within the quadrangle of buildings was planned as a garden and an open courtyard for promenading. In 1852 however it became home to the Museum’s library department, and the Reading Room along with the iron bookstacks surrounding it opened in 1857.

When the library was relocated to the British Library in 1997 the area was redeveloped into a public space. Designed by Foster and Partners, the Great Court was transformed into a two-acre indoor courtyard enclosed by a spectacular glass roof, made up of 3,212 unique panes of glass, with the Reading Room in the centre.

The Queen Elizabeth II Great Court was opened by Her Majesty the Queen on 6th December 2000.

A wonderful piece of home art showcasing the fascinating architecture of the British Museum.
