The Rhinoceros Mounted Postcard
Exclusive to the British Museum, a mounted postcard of Albrecht Dürer’s The Rhinoceros (1515).
Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528) was one of the first international artists; a celebrity both during his own lifetime and in the centuries since. A major artist of the northern Renaissance, he was highly praised by his contemporaries, and was described shortly after his death as a “prince among German painters.”
Dürer’s Rhinoceros woodcut is his most famous work and, although having never seen a rhinoceros his image of the armoured beast contains some anatomical inaccuracies, the print remains as popular today as it was in the 16th century.
A fascinating piece of home art.
