Exclusive to the British Museum; a souvenir coin based an ancient Greek pot dated to around 540BC-530BC.

The decorations on the vase portray a key scene from Greek mythology: Achilles slaying Penthesilea. A vital part of the Trojan saga, it is the moment in which Achilles (a Greek warrior) and Penthesilea (a queen of the Amazons, who were the enemy) fall in love. The vase shows Achilles thrusting his spear into the neck of the Amazon whose ambiguous pose - half fleeing, half falling - cleverly conveys the essence of her predicament. His eyes meet hers as he delivers the fatal blow.

The façade of the Museum and the British Museum logo is on the reverse side of the coin. A display plastic case is included.
The design of this coin is taken from a vase now housed in the British Museum's collection, which shows the Greek hero Achilles slaying Penthesilea, the queen of the Amazons during the epic Trojan war. The climax of the scene, as represented in the traditional black-figure design, shows Achilles thrusting his spear into the neck of Penthesilea at the very moment he falls in love with her.
A charming souvenir of the museum.
