This replica of the Egyptian god Anubis has been modelled on an original piece within the British Museum collection. The original, from the late period of Ancient Egypt, is a Bronze figure of Anubis as a standing jackal-headed figure wearing armlets, bracelets and anklets.

Anubis, the god of cemetries and embalming, was associated with the mummification and protection of the dead for their journey into the afterlife. Originally thought to be based on the jackals that roamed cemeteries at night, Anubis was the god of embalming rituals and adopted a human form with a dog?s head. He appears in Book of the Dead papyri undertaking the mummification of the deceased. In legend it was Anubis who took care of the body of Osiris after he had been murdered by his evil brother Seth. In the Valley of the Kings tombs were sealed with images of Anubis to protect the dead against evil.

Exclusive to the British Museum, a replica of an ancient Egyptian bronze figure of Anubis.

Hand-made in the UK, this highly detailed replica has been cast from a mould taken from the original Late Period bronze sculpture, now housed in the British Museum. The figure shows the jackal-headed god posed with one leg forward as though in motion.

Anubis is one of the most well-known of the ancient Egyptian gods. Worshipped as the guardian and protector of the dead, Anubis was usually depicted as a jackal (a long-legged wild dog) or a wolf. He is also sometimes depicted as having the body of a man and the head of a dog. As can be seen in art from the time, Anubis watched over the mummification process before conducting the soul through the underworld. He was present for the Weighing of the Heart ceremony, and determined whether the deceased was worthy to enter the realm of the dead.

A striking gift for a lover of ancient Egyptian sculpture.
